What is the best tool use in expert judgment?

During the reporting in our Project Management subject, each of the group tackled about the expert judgment. What is expert judgment all about? So for me, when I heard the word expert judgment one thing that comes into my mind is that expert judgment is that in order for the project team to understand deeply their project they would find an expertise to know that such particular problem. But according to the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK), expert judgment is often used to assess the inputs needed to develop the project charter. Such judgment and expertise is applied to any technical and management details during this process. Such expertise is provided by any group or an individual with specialized knowledge or training and is available from any sources, including the other units within the organization, consultants, and the stakeholders including customers or sponsors, professional and technical associations and the industry groups.


In order for me to understand deeply the word expert judgment, I researched it through the internet and as what I have read in the site www.my-project-management-expert.com it stated that Expert Judgment is a widely used tools and techniques in almost all major process in the PMBOK from initiating till closing of the project or its phase. In some of the processes it is the one and only technique mentioned. When we say expert, expert are those individuals or a group who possess specialized knowledge or training in a particular area. In project management, experts are either part of the project such as the project manager or involved such as the stake holders in the project processes. Project teams with a project manager and team members with relevant experience in the project related subject can perform the project with more success probability than those are not. In other than the project team, generally there are also available experts like project consultants, the user groups, and the subject matter experts. In judgment, judgment provided by those people with expertise in an appropriate project area is utilized at various stages of the project phase in order to do an effective project management.


According to a blog entitled “IT Project Management”, there are four sources of expert judgment available in order to help on a project. First are the CONSULTANTS – the consultants can be hired from outside of the company to serve as an expert for a project. But however, this kind of sources is expensive and cause too much cost to rise on a project. For an example, a company that is specialized in a natural gas may be hired a consultant on a pipeline project. Second are the specialized and technical associations – the specialized and technical groups can provide an expert judgment when the information needed is very detailed or technical. For an example, if you need to know what the building code is for a residential home, you could ask the local builders association. Third are the manufacturing groups – the manufacturing groups can offer general information for the project. For an example, if you need to know how long it takes for a cement to cure, a construction group would be able to answer on your question. Lastly are the other units or other departments inside the organizations – preferably, this is the best place to obtain expert judgment and it can obtained at no cost to the project team.


After determining which experts or groups of experts can help you during on the different project phase on a project, you can use tools and techniques to obtain the expert judgment that you need. So first, the interviews: An interview can be on a one-on-one or a many-to-one basis. We already know that an interview is conducted by asking a series of question that will increase your knowledge of the project or in a particular project activity. Next is the brainstorming: brainstorming works by getting a group to focus on a problem and then coming up with as many solutions as possible. And once the session has resulted into a number of solutions, and then the results can be analyzed. Lastly, the past data: past data uses as the knowledge which is gained on a similar past project activity to obtain duration estimates for each of the activity associated with a current project. While a certain technique might be appropriate in some situations, in others the same technique wouldn't give you the information you need. Interviews are best used when knowledgeable, experienced people are available at an affordable cost and specific information is needed, while brainstorming is best used when input for multiple experts needed or when experienced people aren’t available. Past data is best used when records are accurate and both projects are similar.
When using an expert judgment in a project there are also advantages and disadvantages of it. There are many advantages when using the expert judgment technique for estimating activity duration. The advantages of it are: it allows for different perception, it makes valuable use of prior knowledge and experience, it can help you find creative solutions, and it helps you avoid re-inventing the wheel. Expert judgment, like so many things has also disadvantages. You have to be careful when using an expert judgment, it’s because it can be time consuming. It can also tie up experienced team for many hours, to the failure of other projects. In addition, expert judgment can be costly if you have to go outside of your company to hire an expert. Another disadvantage is that experts may be likely to downplay the fact that an activity took longer than the expected on past projects. When using an expert judgment, used it wisely though expert judgment is a great and very useful tool for estimating activity duration. It allows for different perspective and more creative solutions. And the most importantly, when using expert judgment, your team will be less likely to re-invent the wheel.


The interviews, the brainstorming and the past data for me are the best and useful tool that is used in expert judgment.

How is a project different to any other work? Is Project Management relevant to me?

So first, when we say project: it is normally defined as a work to bring about a beneficial change and which has a start and an end, a multi-disciplinary team brought together for the project, constraints of cost, time and quality, and a scope of work that is unique and involves uncertainty. According to Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK), a project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, a service or a result. Why is it temporary? It is because; in every project has a definite beginning and a definite ending. The end is reached when the projects objectives have been achieved, or it becomes clear that the project objectives will not or cannot be met, or the need for the project no longer exist and the project is terminated or completed. There are many project that I have met in my life, like in our subject System Analysis and Design (SAD) in which we are in a group of five and we will going to adopt a company and make documentation or shall we say deliverables on how to improve their existing system into a new and better one. In this project, I learned a lot especially on the schedule, you must be hectic on time that is allotted on the project, do not just relax instead make it before on the due time. And even though we did not submit it on time but I’m happy also that we have complied it.


How is a project different to any other work? According to a site spottydog.u-net.com, they stated that a continuous process is not a project and the development of new rent or lettings policy is a project but the subsequent day to day operation of that policy is a continuous process that is usually managed by an individual or a management. For me, based on my own understanding of how is a project different to any other work, it is because when you are making a project you must have focus and determination so that you can achieved your objective on that particular project.


Does project management relevant to me? I could say that having a Project management is very important to me because project management itself does have a quality of managing and organizing the information’s that you needed in a project – from its scope, the resources and down to the time management as well as the team management and the most important is to set the requirements that you should meet in order to employ changes to the project. According also to the site spottydog.u-net.com, they stated that if you have been given a specific job to complete then you should consider using the principles of project management if it has the following features: - A defined goal, time, cost and quality (or functionality) constraints, requires expertise and support from other functions, Involves a unique (to you or the organization) scope of work. Using a project team approach will help you to achieve the beneficial gain in a structured, controlled and cost effective way.

Is project management the best method of implementing change? I think, it is good or best to have a method of project management in a project, in order to have a best and good result in the project delivery in a project. According to the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK), project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities in order to meet the project requirements.


When we say project management, it is comes from the two words which is the project and the management. Project is a task of work to bring about a beneficial change and which has a start and an end or a multi-disciplinary team who brought together for the project, has constraints of cost, time and quality, and has a scope of work that is unique and involves uncertainty. A good example of a project is an introduction of an improvement to an existing process.


In project management as what I have learned in our discussion, project management has evolved a discipline to managed the new and unusual. It has an objectives of defining the project, reduce it to a set of manageable task (Work Break-down Structure), obtain appropriate and necessary resources, build a team or teams to perform the project work, plan the work and allocate the resources that will be needed to do the task or the project, monitor and control the work, report progress to senior management and the project sponsor, closed down the project when it is completed and lastly review it to ensure the lessons are learned and widely understood the project. All of these are the best way or the best method for implementing change in a project.


In a project management there is a project manager in which the project manager will be the leader of the project team and will be responsible for ensuring the process of making the project. So the project manager will gain the approval for the project aim and the terms of reference, selecting and leading the team and setting individual objectives, ensuring the feasibility study is complete, ensuring that the project is planned in appropriate detail, allocating and monitoring the work and the cost, motivating the team, reporting progress back to the organization, helping the team to solve a project problems, achieve through the team and the goals, and reviewing and closing down the project. In managing a project, you must have the skills in order for you to manage it successfully. It includes business knowledge, the technical skills and the individual and the team leadership skills. Individual Skills are the personal skills in a team; these skills are likely to include a good presentation and persuasive skills, good written skills, high energy and credibility. Team Skills is very important, it will appreciate the differing needs of both individuals and the project team at the different stages of the project. And the Technical Skills, it is good to have a technical skill in setting objectives, planning complex tasks, negotiating resources, financial planning, contract management, monitoring skills, managing creative thinking and problem solving, as well as their own specialist topic.
In implementing a project there is also a tools and techniques which are being used during a project life cycle of it. So here are some of the tools and techniques which are being used in a project management. First, verifying the objective setting – it is a kind of technique in which it ensures that the objectives for the project can be measured and verified to ensure that they have met all of it. Second, Gantts Charts – it is used to display the result of your analysis in a simple bar chart format that can be readily understood by those who have not involved in the detail of the project. Third, Brain Storming - it is a technique used in all stages of the project in order to encourage creative thinking and solve the problems. Fourth, Work Break-down Structure (WBS) – it is a technique to analyze deeply the content of the work and the cost by breaking it down into a sub-components parts or into a smaller elements. Fifth, Critical Path Analysis – it is used to analyze and identify the tasks that are critical in determining the overall duration of the project. Sixth, Milestone Planning – it is used to show the major steps that are needed to reach the goal or the project on time. And lastly, accrued cost and earned value analysis – it is used to measures and enables the progress of the project to be monitored in financial terms and conditions.


In a project team there are also involving in a project and these are the project sponsor, the project sponsor should be a senior in the organization who has the most to gain from the project’s success and most lose if it fails. And the project customer, the project customer should either be a member of the project team or represented on that team.


All of these I have been stated above are some of the important task and techniques that can proved that a project management is the best thing in implementing a change to a project. It is because; it will provide a process of delivering a changes and a perfect result in implementing a project. I can say that this is very useful in managing a project because it specifies the task which would be carrying out the life of the project and can have a good quality result of a project.

As we have been discussed last November 15, we talked about the different the different trends and opportunities in convergence and especially the death of the consumers or as what have our professor said from consumers and now the rise of the “PROSUMERS” which is the us: people, it is because as the generations changes a lot, the nature and the characteristics of the people is also being change. It is being change because of the things that currently exists in today’s generation, and that’s why people are also changing. In the old days, the people as the consumers will still act as a consumers, who’s buying the products that is being introduced or sell into the market. As we all know that in a marketing industry, it is about the producers and the consumers which are being involved aside from the products. When we say producers, from its definition they are the one who produce or the one manufacture the products that will be sold to the consumers, while the consumers are the core or the center of the market. In short, if both of the producers and the consumers are not been involved in the market, then it would be that the market industry would not be alive for the both of the producers and the consumers are the one who manufactures and bought the products. These two which is the producers and the consumers along with the market are being changed thru the convergence, which is the convergence is now part also of the market because it brings an enormous development and changes in the market industry.


Once again what is a convergence? How could it help our marketing industry? Convergence as what have been tackle in our discussion, convergence was described as the existence of the innovative products of technology in the industry. This convergence is introducing the changes in the market industry and this is also the meeting of the newly exists products which are now observed in the market. As we move along towards a new generation, there are many opportunities occur from the way of life changes as well as the growth of different styles in business that are developed through the convergence. A good example of that is the use of Information Technology, the development of mobile and smart phones, and the development of the handheld computers. These only mean that the convergence is really changing and improving the world. This is clear that in several ways of an entrepreneur are now being involved in the technology as a part of their business because of having a different technology to offer can make the customers or their client satisfy their desires and needs. As the trends and opportunities expand a lot in marketing ideas and techniques had been generated to deliver company products. As an example, the use of the internet technology is totally been used on how the different businesses are being modeled and how the business strategies are being implemented. As the convergence of the new technology continue develop over the market, the quality of the peoples life style would be change and also the way on how they facing the market would also be changed.


The “Death of Consumers”, it is simply all about from being the consumers and the rise of the prosumers. According to the site woriQ.com, they defined that a Prosumer refers to one of two possible portmanteaus formed by contracting either the word producer or professional with the word consumer. Further, prosumer has taken on conflicting spins: the business sector sees the prosumer as a means of offering a wider range of products and services whereas activists sees the prosumer as having greater independence from the mainstream economy. According in the book of Alvin Toffler which is the book “The Third Wave” coined the term prosumer when he predicted that the role of producers and consumers would begin to blur and merge. In particular, Toffler envisioned a highly saturated marketplace as mass production of standardized products began to satisfy basic consumer demands. To continue growing profit, businesses would initiate a process of mass customization, that is, the mass production of highly customized products. However, to reach a high degree of customization, consumers would have to take part in the production process especially in specifying design requirements.


So recently, markets are conversations with the new economy moving from passive consumers to an active prosumers. As an example for instance, the Amazon.com emerged as an ecommerce leader -- partially due to its ability to construct customer relations as conversations rather than simple, one-time sales. Amazon ... supports exchange of information among customers; it provides spaces for customers to add to the site, in the form of reviews. The usage of prosumer is springing up, especially among some activist groups. That is, the producer and consumer roles are being combined so as to exclude (or at least diminish) the role of the corporate producer; thus, rather than generating higher corporate profits from value-added products, producers would, at best, be reduced to supplying lower-profit commodity inputs. Indeed, the more consumer-oriented prosumer spin is irrelevant to many people with diminished disposable income caused by various economic trends such as globalization, automation, and wealth concentration.


The concept of a prosumer idea combines some of the common characteristics of a professional and a consumer. The term is generally applied to situations where consumers are considered to have reached a level of sophistication that the professional-consumer can effectively dictate the perimeters for the production of goods and services in terms of quality and structure. The difference between the garden variety consumer and the prosumer is that the latter typically possesses such a strong working knowledge with the product that he or she can successfully determine and perhaps even design a better product offering. In today’s generation, Prosumers are now common in many fields that were once the sole province of professionals. One good example is the combination of affordable computer technology and the Internet has also made it possible for the prosumer to assume a place in the world of publishing. Thanks to software programs and high quality printing materials and equipment, the prosumer can now produce hard copy and electronic magazines on a favorite hobby or interest. Desktop publishing also allows these highly skilled amateurs to produce high quality greeting cards, promotional brochures, and a wide range of published material. Even fledgling writers can be classified as prosumers, simply by using current technology to product an electronic book for distribution.


Commencing the idea of the rise of the prosumers, where the great engagement of prosumers came into reality and consumers to give a deep communications between the both parties. Because of the resulting convergence of prosumers, many effects are observed that has attained by the concept of prosumers. As what I have read in a blog about the rise of the prosumer, The term “Prosumer” was first mentioned (or created) in 1980 by Alvin Toffler in his book “The Third Wave”, describing the phenomena that consumers are not just merely consumers but becoming producers, too. According to Williams and Tapscott who write the book “Wikinomics” pick up the concept Prosumer and expanded its usage to include a growing numbers of consumers who are enabled to become producers, all driven by technologies that facilitate the cost efficient exchange of information, the mass-production of personalized products and services, and the immediate contribution and improvement in any kind of open source projects.


What is the difference of prosumers and consumers? I have stated above some of the descriptions and the differences of the two. But then again, in the period that the market has the control over the people, they termed the costumers as a consumer who buys or consumed their products. And at the time of the convergence, where in the technology have merged with the market processes, peoples’ demands had grown and in this specific period they had been taking the control over the market and hence they were called the prosumers. Prosumers take the part of being participative in the field of marketing as the user or consumer of the products and services. These prosumers are more interactive. They demand for what they want and need to the producers for the market to produce it. Prosumers are veteran form of consumers who deal and interact with the market for services, unlike the consumers who used to buy or consume the goods and services in the market without any demand or suggestions, prosumers are more skillful that’s why they were termed as professional consumers. The fast changing of the market from simple from to a complex and interesting form has been change and affected the quality of the services, had a for the most part contributed for the of the world. The behavior and lifestyle of the people from being a consumer to a higher structure of being a prosumer had increased the quality of life. The start of having so called prosumers which emphasizes the meaning of giving the clients the trend to apply modifications, enhancements or requests on the purchasing product. Through the influence and behavior of the market prosumers, they had been changing the structure and scope of the market in a large percentage every now and then. Who knows, the evolution still continuous and there might be a more dominant form of market users (the producers and consumers to prosumers).


As what I have read in a blog entitled “Marketing Geek”, it stated there that brands and their underlying business models are falling into three different categories of dealing and interacting with the “Prosumer” concept: First is the, Brands like Wikipedia or Firefox that can only exist through Prosumers. Their whole business model relies on the contribution of consumers. With these kind of business are available over the internet which has been made successfully because of the large communication or shall we say e-mail of the consumers or their clients to have a time to engage on such thing. These kinds of businesses are dependent on the awareness of the consumers and the willingness of them to communicate and make a move to have a deal on it. In other words, the businesses in this fashion are just moving because of the existing prosumers. Second are the brands like Lego, Haagen-Dazs or Addidas who allow the incorporation of Prosumers behavior in two ways: either as contribution to their own product design and creation process like Haagen Dazs’ ice cream flavor competition or as the opportunity to personalize their own version of the brand’s product liked customized shoes. Just like in the havaianas, their brands are granted to increase the availability of the customization on a thing where in their clients wanted to have. In which you can customized your own havaianas slippers. Lastly are the brands like Pepsi or Frito-Lay that open up very slightly their brand control to allow consumers to create TV spots or naming rights, all rather on the fringe of their brand experience. For me all these brands are valuable to the prosumers in which some argued that these brands do not really embrace the concept of the Prosumers but simply it pretend to take them serious by allowing them to influence non-core element of their brand.


As the population of the people in the world grow and changes every day, billions of people now are demanding for the supplies and the services in the market. The behavior of the consumers is also being change because of their different personalities, behavior occurs either for the individual or in a group like in a friends influences what kind of clothes they wear, or in an organization; the people on the job are making decisions to which product the solid should use. The consumer’s behavior involves also the use and the disposal of the products, what kind of the quality of the product, does it has a good quality or not, as well as the study on how they purchased that product. The Prosumers has their different behavior which demands more and more, and for this day, the Prosumers were considered too aggravating and craving for the better services which could handle them and could give them a lot more satisfaction of the payment they had been wanted. For these matter, the market are compel to find a way to give that wants and needs of those craving customers, basing on what they yell. Thus, the evolution of the market along with the technology and the customers or the consumers within its scope has been changed into a better and enhanced one, which considers the wants and desires of the consumers. Prosumers are considered as a selected type of customers who have their own mind to think for specific fashioned styles which fits there need, wants and personalities. Prosumers would have rather spend their time on stressing what they want, that’s why they were called as professional consumers. Pursuing on what they really wanted, these professional consumers or the prosumers would request a thing to satisfy their needs and demands.


As an example of the prosumers is that they use the internet to browse or search a certain thing, like if they want to eat a McDonalds product, in order for them not to go to the McDonalds establishments then they just visit the McDonalds website. In their website, the prosumers will just drag the menu or just simply they can make their own style of burger. And I think this kind of scenario the “Death of Consumers” occurred.
For me, I guess is that the rise of the Prosumer will continue and influence a larger percentage of a company marketing activity. But there will be always a large role for brands which apply strong control and an iron fist in designing its brand experience. They might allow the Prosumer to play in a well limited way but the core of its brand experience will be centrally defined and designed. As the technology continues to evolve, there is no doubt that the prosumer phenomenon will continue to grow and grow larger.Any marketer needs to find the right long-term path within these three different strategic options of integrating strongly or lightly the Prosumer, all in alignment of what makes a particular brand successful. But no brand can ignore the Prosumer anymore.

In Technopreneurship, we already know that it follows the SEED role which it is comprises the Self-Mastery, Environmental Mastery, Enterprise Mastery and the Development mastery. So, during our last discussion about the SEED role we have discussed the Environmental Mastery in which it encompasses or involve the trends and the opportunities in convergence and also the marketing convergence. Along with our discussion we can be open mind to know and recognize the trends, the opportunities of the convergence. Marketing today is already involving into the new technologies or shall we say making a new technology in order to have a high and competitive value in the industry.


At first, I really don’t have any ideas of what are the trends and the opportunities in convergence. So here I describe what are trends, opportunities and the convergence. So first the trends, according to the Encarta dictionaries, trends describes as a tendency of moving towards a something or in a particular direction. As what have our professor said that, in the old days, the ice cubes was being used but as years passes by, Ice plants were arise and then the new technologies come, the refrigerators or the refs were being used in today’s generation. A trend for me is that when you have a product which you are advertising to your customers, you must look forward in the new technologies so that your products would be in demand for the customers or your clients and you must have to be unique and be creative. Second is the opportunities as being describe also in the Encarta dictionaries, it is the chance especially one that offers a kind of advantage. It is just the same when you have an opportunity to be a scholar in a university then why don’t you grab it, because it is your chance to be a student in a premier university. That’s why in the industry or in the marketing if they find an opportunity to produce a product which is in need or in demand by the customers or the clients, and then they grab that opportunity so that they will have a competitive and high value in the industry. And the convergence, it is the automated and integration of information technology environment that are available to a user or the consumers. Convergence started when the industry understand that there still missing of the products that present in the market. Some business companies seen that the products they sell in the market are not sufficient to make the life of people more convenient and useful. That’s why they provide a more services into their customers or their consumers. In today’s new economy, it brings also a new trend and a remarkable ways, strategies in introducing their products to the market. In convergence, it also talks about the new strategies style of marketing, it evaluates the past and the present approaches of the products in the market. Today, many companies use the internet to advertise or promote their products and introduce it to the consumers which is us. Convergence also gives us an idea of having an opportunity using the technology. As we all know that the technologies provide a way to the people to find or seek a job for their own, like the internet. We know that the internet is widely used to explore or to find a job opportunity, and uses as the medium of some people or some companies to gain or increase their consumers from the different places in the world. The internet role has changed rapidly from being used mainly for communication, and easier, faster access to information for some Universities and various other educational institutions.


There are many convergences to mention but, I identify the technological convergence especially in the media since we are engaging today in the new technologies. Today, we are surrounded by a multi-level convergent media world where all modes of communication and information are continually reforming to adapt to the enduring demands of technologies, “changing the way we create, consume, learn and interact with each other. The Televisions, the Radio and the Newspapers are main mediums today in accessing entertainment and news. But now, those three mediums have converged into one and now all the people in the world can read and watch news on the internet. Convergence is the concept in which the old and new technologies or media interconnect. Convergence is simply put on how the individual consumers interact with others on a social level and use various media platforms to create new experiences, new forms of media and content that connect us socially, and not just to other consumers, but to the corporate producers of media in ways that have not been as readily accessible in the past.


Since the technology has evolved in the past years so many companies are beginning to converge technologies to create demand for new products. The televisions in the old days are now converged the technologies of movies and radio, and today it also converging with the mobile phone industries. Converging technologies seems to be squashing many types of demanded technologies into one. Just like the mobile phones, it is manufactured not only to carry out phone calls, text messages, but it also holds images, videos, music, television, camera, and multimedia of all types. That’s why manufacturers are now integrating more advanced features of the mobile phones such as GPS, video recording, data storage and security mechanisms into a traditional mobile phones. So as the world evolves, it could be happened that the old media would be changed to another side by a new media. Media convergence requires companies operating within the scope of the media to rethink existing assumptions about media from the consumer's point of view, as these assumptions affect both marketing and programming decisions. Media producers have to respond to these newly empowered consumers in today's society to reinvent existing concepts to keep them up to date with emerging trends. Consumers these days do not just want to be on a one way transmission model where they simply receive information. They want to interact with it and they also want to create it. They want to participate within it. Media convergence has allowed that to happen and as the creation of new communication technologies continues to occur; this trend is here to stay.


Along with our discussion, our professor mentioned the four P’s in the marketing which is being predefined into four C’s. From the four P’s which are the product, the price, the promotion, and the place now it has been change into C’s which are from product to customer, from price to cost, from promotion to communication, and from place to convenient. The reason why this four P’s change into four C’s, it’s because in the old days it is the manufacturers who is being in demand to the consumers but in today’s generation it is the consumers who are demanding to the manufacturers. It is called the death of consumers. From being a consumers to a prosumers. When we say prosumer, this term is generally applied to situations where consumers are considered to have reached a level of sophistication that the professional-consumer can effectively dictate the perimeters for the production of goods and services in terms of quality and structure. According to the Wikipedia, the term prosumer has taken on multiple conflicts meaning. As I have observed today, I can conclude that the convergence of the technologies is really very successful. The products and its services that were enjoying today is comes from the result of convergence. I observed today that in everything are made and acquired instantly. Today most of the products that are introduced in the market are the products of the trends and opportunities of convergence especially in the technology. For me this is how convergence works in the technology industry.
